Whether you are in good financial shape, facing financial problems, or recovering from Bankruptcy, you need to periodically check your credit report with the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion). By law, you can get copies of your credit reports every year. The easiest way to get the three reports is to go to annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228 and request the reports. You should review each report in detail to make sure it is accurate, and dispute any errors by following the instructions on the forms. Note that there are many other websites offering free reports or credit scores, some with similar sounding web addresses, but virtually all of them try to sell services that are often worthless (for example, credit monitoring you can do yourself). See the warning on the FTC website for more information about these sites. Note that your credit report is different than your credit score. If you plan on purchasing a vehicle or house in the coming months, you may want to pay the fee to get your credit scores.
